Accepting the Incident Safety Officer assignment
Practice the initial briefing at an alarm response. Review the incident, give your response aloud, and compare it with the instructor’s explanation. No account is required.
Understand the assignment
Before beginning the Incident Safety Officer assignment, confirm the operations underway, the companies involved, your area of responsibility, and how to report a safety concern. The ISO reports to Command and works with the company officers responsible for their crews.
Tell Command if the assignment requires additional coverage or specialist assistance. Follow your department’s procedures for urgent communication and immediate safety intervention.
Fictional exercise
An alarm at a neighborhood business
Engine 1 is inside checking the building. The manager says the alarm panel was reset before arrival. Engine 1’s company officer has not yet reported the crew’s location or findings. Command assigns you as Incident Safety Officer.
- Known assignment
- Engine 1 is investigating; Command has assigned Safety.
- Reported information
- The manager says the alarm was reset.
- Still missing
- The company officer’s current location, findings, and unresolved concerns.
Practice your initial report
- Ask Command to confirm the work and area you will cover.
- Identify the current report you need from Engine 1’s company officer.
- Confirm the reporting arrangement, radio channel, and urgent communication procedure.
- Say what you will check next and when you will update Command.
Give a brief spoken response before opening the instructor’s explanation below.
Compare your response
The reset is a report from the manager. It does not explain why the alarm activated or confirm that the building is safe. You still need the company officer’s report on the crew’s location, findings, and any concerns.
For example: “Safety to Command: Confirm I’m covering the alarm investigation and crew access. I need Engine 1’s location and findings.”
Command confirms the assignment. You confirm the radio channel and how urgent traffic will be communicated, then state what you will check next and when you will report back. Use your department’s terminology and procedures.
Your response should establish a shared understanding of the assignment without delaying an urgent safety action.
Respond to a change
Engine 1’s company officer reports that another work area needs checking. You cannot observe both areas from your current position. What will you tell Command, and what assistance or change in assignment will you request?
Review the changed assignment
Identify the area you can monitor and explain why you cannot cover both. Ask Command to arrange additional qualified assistance or revise the assignment. Confirm who will cover the second area and that they have accepted the assignment.
In the full course, an instructor introduces changes, observes your response, and provides feedback. Classroom worksheets record your decisions after the exercise.
This CTS practice exercise introduces the first unit. It is a fictional classroom example; your department determines your qualifications and authority for an operational ISO assignment. The National Fire Academy Incident Safety Officer syllabus (PDF) provides further context for the role.
