A practical study routine
- Confirm your references. Use your current MFA course or examination instructions to list the assigned books, editions, chapters, and supplements.
- Read by subject. Write brief notes, explain key terms in your own words, and connect them with a department example.
- Practice and explain. Use a topic set, then explain why the best answer fits and why the other choices do not.
- Revisit weak subjects. Return to the assigned reading, attempt mixed practice without notes, and review the questions you missed.
Introductory study guide
Review these subjects, then explain how you would apply them in a fire department. The source notes identify the public MFA skill sheets behind each topic.
Evaluate performance and recommend policy
Base performance feedback on documented work and defined expectations. Explain a policy problem, recommend a workable change, and identify how its effect will be reviewed. Support purchasing decisions with the required information and approval process.
Topic source
CFO 2-201–203, pages 1–3; NFPA 1021-2020, 5.2.1–5.2.2, 5.4.1–5.4.3, 5.4.5–5.4.6
Communicate facts and plan development
Prepare accurate public information through the authorized release process. Review supplied scene evidence and witness and crew accounts when considering fire origin and preliminary cause. Support findings with facts and identify unresolved issues. Plan professional development around identified responsibilities and needs.
Topic source
CFO 2-204–206, pages 4–6; NFPA 1021-2020, 5.4.4, 5.5.1, 5.2.3
Review incidents and organize operations
Review incident reports for useful findings. Explain the objectives, assignments, resources, and coordination in the supplied operational problem. Use the applicable procedures and available information rather than inventing incident conditions.
Topic source
CFO 2-207–208, pages 7–8; NFPA 1021-2020, 5.6.1–5.6.3
Learn from injuries and coordinate assistance
Examine documented information when considering injury causes. Protect confidential records and identify who will implement and evaluate corrective actions. Explain mutual-aid needs and arrangements through the department’s established planning and coordination process.
Topic source
CFO 2-209–210, pages 9–10; NFPA 1021-2020, 5.7.1, 5.3.1
Apply what you reviewed
One month has 8 incomplete reports out of 40. The next has 10 out of 100, using the same review criteria. What can you conclude?
Compare your reasoning
The incomplete-report rate fell from 20% to 10%, although the count increased. Those figures alone do not identify the cause. Investigate before attributing the change to a policy, instructor, or member.

Standards and source details
The Pro Board Massachusetts listing and the contents of the posted MFA practical sheets identify NFPA 1021-2020. Practical criteria establish subject relevance, not the full written-exam scope or assigned reading list. The Officer II Part A download URL contains 2024, but the PDF identifies NFPA 1021-2020.

Confirm your assigned reading
Use the instructions for your specific course or examination to confirm the book title and edition, assigned chapters, supplements, and any transition to a newer standard. A publisher’s newest edition or an older course listing does not establish what your examination uses.
