A practical study routine
- Confirm your references. Use your current MFA course or examination instructions to list the assigned books, editions, chapters, and supplements.
- Read by subject. Write brief notes, explain key terms in your own words, and connect them with a department example.
- Practice and explain. Use a topic set, then explain why the best answer fits and why the other choices do not.
- Revisit weak subjects. Return to the assigned reading, attempt mixed practice without notes, and review the questions you missed.
Introductory study guide
Review these subjects, then explain how you would apply them in a fire department. The source notes identify the public MFA skill sheets behind each topic.
Direct company work
Give clear assignments for emergency and routine work. Check that members understand their responsibilities, available resources, and reporting arrangements. When leading a drill, consider the task, personnel, equipment, and safety requirements.

Apply policy and respond to people
Use the supplied department policy when handling a personnel concern or explaining a change. Listen to public inquiries, collect relevant facts, and follow the established response process. Distinguish your authority from matters requiring referral.
Topic source
FO 1-104–106, pages 5–7; NFPA 1021-2020, 4.2.4–4.2.5, 4.3.1–4.3.3, 4.4.1–4.4.2
Gather and preserve incident information
Prepare for inspections and collect useful preincident information. Follow the assigned procedures for protecting a fire scene and reporting observations. Separate what you observed from information reported by others and from conclusions still needing investigation. In an accident review, connect findings to contributing causes, corrective action, and follow-up.

FO 1-107–109, pages 8–10; NFPA 1021-2020, 4.1.1–4.1.2, 4.5.1–4.5.3, 4.7.2
Support department administration
Know the reporting structure. Explain the need and supporting facts in a budget request. Complete accurate records and apply the department’s health and wellness procedures within the company officer’s responsibilities.
Topic source
FO 1-110–113, pages 11–14; NFPA 1021-2020, 4.4.3–4.4.5, 4.7.3
Apply what you reviewed
Your department requires equipment requests to identify the need, quantity, and estimated cost. A request says only “replace training equipment.” What information would you seek?
Compare your reasoning
Identify the equipment and its condition, explain the training need, and obtain the required quantity and cost information. Apply the stated approval process rather than assuming the request is already authorized.
