A practical study routine
- Confirm your references. Use your current MFA course or examination instructions to list the assigned books, editions, chapters, and supplements.
- Read by subject. Write brief notes, explain key terms in your own words, and connect them with a department example.
- Practice and explain. Use a topic set, then explain why the best answer fits and why the other choices do not.
- Revisit weak subjects. Return to the assigned reading, attempt mixed practice without notes, and review the questions you missed.
Introductory study guide
Review these subjects, then explain how you would apply them in a fire department. The source notes identify the public MFA skill sheets behind each topic.
Plan the sequence and resources
Arrange instruction in a workable sequence. Account for scheduling conflicts, instructors, equipment, and other resources. Explain the need behind a purchase request and follow the supplied budget and approval process.

Evaluate records and instructor performance
Review training records for required information and accuracy. Evaluate an instructor against defined criteria and observed performance. Give specific feedback that identifies effective work and an improvement the instructor can act on.
Topic source
FI 2-203–204, pages 3–5; NFPA 1041-2019, 5.2.5–5.2.6
Develop a lesson and its assessment
Write a measurable objective, then select instruction and practice that prepare learners to meet it. Assess the same objective. Check the answer key and supporting references, and gather feedback about the course.
Topic source
FI 2-205a–c, pages 6–9; NFPA 1041-2019, 5.3.2, 5.5.2–5.5.3
Supervise delivery and make supported changes
Monitor instructors, students, and training conditions. Address risk and obstacles to learning as instruction proceeds. Explain any lesson revision and check that it supports the required learning outcome.
Topic source
FI 2-206–208, pages 10–13; NFPA 1041-2019, 5.4.2–5.4.3, 5.3.3
Apply what you reviewed
A lesson objective asks officers to find missing information in incident reports. The proposed final question only asks them to define an incident report. What should change?
Compare your reasoning
Use an assessment that requires reviewing a new report for missing information against the stated criteria. Defining a term does not demonstrate the review skill described in the objective.
