A practical study routine
- Confirm your references. Use your current MFA course or examination instructions to list the assigned books, editions, chapters, and supplements.
- Read by subject. Write brief notes, explain key terms in your own words, and connect them with a department example.
- Practice and explain. Use a topic set, then explain why the best answer fits and why the other choices do not.
- Revisit weak subjects. Return to the assigned reading, attempt mixed practice without notes, and review the questions you missed.
Introductory study guide
Review these subjects, then explain how you would apply them in a fire department. The source notes identify the public MFA skill sheets behind each topic.
Prepare to teach an established lesson
Start with the objective and the supplied lesson plan. Check the room, instructional aids, equipment, and hazards. Organize the presentation, application, and evaluation so firefighters can meet the stated objective.

Adapt delivery and explain the reason
Identify what needs to change and explain why. A different visual aid may support the same objective; removing a required skill changes what the lesson teaches. Follow the supplied plan and procedures when deciding what you can adjust.
Topic source
FI 1-102 A–B, page 2; NFPA 1041-2019, 4.3.2–4.3.3, 4.4.4–4.4.5
Keep accurate records and request resources
Check attendance and results against the supporting records. Identify the personnel, equipment, materials, and quantities a lesson needs. Follow the department’s reporting and request process rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
Topic source
FI 1-103–104, pages 3–4; NFPA 1041-2019, 4.2.3–4.2.5
Administer and grade the assessment consistently
Explain the directions and apply the supplied grading policy and answer key. Record the result accurately and provide specific feedback. Resolve uncertainty through the designated process before changing a score or testing condition.
Topic source
FI 1-105–106, pages 5–6; NFPA 1041-2019, 4.5.2–4.5.5
Apply what you reviewed
An apparatus-identification lesson uses projected photographs. The projector fails. Printed copies are available. Explain what you would change and what would stay in the lesson.
Compare your reasoning
Use the printed photographs after checking that everyone can see the required details. Retain the identification objective and assessment. Changing the display method does not require replacing the learning task.
